HOW TO COMPARE CINE TRANSFER COMPANIES

A majority of transfer companies on the web are one man band operations who simply project your film onto a wall or screen and video it off with a camera. With all good intentions, however the results are nevertheless poor.

The biggest problem with transferring film is synchronisation. Most old film was exposed at a rate of 18 or 24 frames per second whilst TV format is 25 frames per second. Since, the frame rate of cine film does not match the frame rate of TV, it misses frames and thus flickers like the old Charlie Chaplin movies.
• Some better studios try to reduce this ''flicker'', using variable-speed equipment and attempt to ''match up'' the speed. Some put it through filters on a computer and try to adjust it there. The resultant film quality comes out awful, but you do not know because you can not remember what it was like the last time you saw it 20 years ago! The worst are the ones who convert your cine to video then use all-in-one Video to DVD machines with fancy buttons to adjust the quality.
• At this point flicker is there for good any detail left is really lost as these machines compress and digitise at one set LOW rate. We use none of this, resulting in remarkable, flicker free, easy-to-watch movies with rich colour and faces you can see in detail.

We transfer film for major Television Companies and a lot of Universities performing research

10 Freebie Services we DO NOT Charge for

1. Digital Sound Transfer: Any Sound on the Cine film is captured, filtered, digitised and input back onto the DVD
2. Multiple Cine Reels: No extra charge for different reel sizes, types, speeds
3. Editing out of Fuzzy Edges: Cine produces a dark fuzzy frame to the picture, we crop it (zoom in just a fraction to push this fuzzy black frame out of view)
4. Play in any Country: Our discs are not just playable in the UK. They are PAL region zero meaning they play anywhere in the PAL world
5. Manual Speed Adjustment: We CHECK each film manually and adjust playback speed as each reel you send could be filmed with differing speeds or cameras etc We do not re-spool your reels onto on big reel, press a button and go.
6. No Blank Areas - many times all the film is not used up, our technicians watch all your film and stop at the last image. You will not have any large blank areas in your DVD or Video blamed on the film saying we only transfer what is there
7. Any Sequence - If you want your films transferred in a certain order just bundle them into similar types, number them and we’ll do it free.
8. Automatically Created Chapter Points: We encode this on your copies. You can press fast forward or skip huge chunks use your DVD player remote control
9. Back Up Copies: In the unlikely event that your Cine Film and even worse DVDs are lost when returning, we can make more from a backup we keep here
10. High Quality Copies: Professional stock with a Lifetime Guarantee not to fail (unless you scratch them) packed into smart, protective, hard plastic cases

10 Ways to Spot Amateurs

Unfortunately a lot of amateurs are earning out of your technical ignorance.
There are also a number of companies who do this as a side line, using inferior equipment but charging Professional Rates. The main ones slap your film in an old projector and use a camcorder to video it off a wall. The results are poor.

This Video footage is then recorded to a DVD using domestic quality home computers (loaded with Video Encoding Cards) or at worse an all in one Domestic Quality Video to DVD Converter. With fancy words and jargon you would never know. Anyone can set up this business for less than £1,000 and many have, we find this frustrating which is why we have gone into such detail. The question is do you want cheap or do you want to clearly see the detail and faces in your old Films? Most amateurs or businesses that have this as a sideline are not out to rip you off. It is just their enthusiasm for this profitable hobby or side line can outweigh their experience, resources and expertise required.

10 ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR POTENTIAL SUPPLIER

1. Compatibility: Do they say Guaranteed to work on 95% of all players? Why not 100% our DVDs are 100% compatible. If not we send another one free
2. Videoing: Do they Digitally capture the image like us or do they film it? The best way to tell is if they boast about a video camera eg 3 chip CCD broadcast camera, yes a nice camera but that still means your cine will be projected and filmed off by a (nice) camera
3. Offered 2 Hours on DVD? They will be ''compressing'' the footage most likely on a home computer. Compressing reduces quality. 90 mins is the maximum for the best quality.
4. Quality better than the original: This promise is ridiculous, how can you make something better? Hollywood and Broadcast quality is another popular phrase.
5. Editing Suite: Do they transfer to an editing suite? Boast about Firewire, correcting colour, levels, flickering on this fancy edit suite? If so it is too late, this should have been done BEFORE capturing the Cine film images not after!  The definition has gone, all you get now is whizzo technology try to tart it up
6. Free Titles, Menus? Definitely low resolution amateur equipment (!) which all have these press button gimmicks
7. Do they Convert directly to MPEG-2? If yes then forget quality. You need to convert to AVI or DV and then encode to MPEG-2 (DVD) from that. This lack of resolution will become increasingly apparent years later as display equipment, (TV) improve. Like listening to music on an audio tape and then CD.
8. Are they knowledgeable? Highlight some words on this page. They should know what VBR stands for or at least DVD (Digital Versatile Disc).
9. Do they label your DVDs? Labelled DVDs will damage your player over time as the heat of your player melts the adhesive on this label
10. Editing Suite: Do they transfer to an editing suite? Boast about Firewire, correcting picture colour on this fancy edit suite? If so it is too late, this should have been done BEFORE capturing the cine images not after!  The definition has gone, all you get now is whizzo technology trying to tart it up

Summary best picture quality, guaranteed no compatibility issues, no flicker, no lost films, deadlines met

7 TRICKS OF THE TRADE

There are a number of Media Companies who offer this as a side line. The worse sub out your job to studios like us with their mark up of course!
Those who do it themselves may not necessarily utilise the latest technology and methods. The quality will certainly be better than the amateurs but our clients have claimed they ended up paying more, particularly the ones who have complicated pricing structures like X pounds per feet of film. Below are the top 7 grudges from clients.

1. CopyProtected DVDs: Preventing you making more copies yourself. You can make copies from our DVD's yourself
2. Compression: Do they use ANY sort of compression ? Reduced Quality
3. Do they say quoting is complicated, send in your cine film for a quote? Then charge for playing them in order to do a quote? What will it cost to get them back? Our prices are up front and fair
4. Colour Correction Fees? Will you get a call saying it needs adjusting costing you more? Direct to MPEG-2 (DVD) can't be adjusted
5. Cleaning & Repair charges: Is this free? Will you get a call saying your film is too brittle?
6. Reel Change Charges: Some firms charge by the minute and when they get your films they say it only covers X type of films
7. Film set up Fee: Do they allow or charge you later once they find all your cine films are mixed or at different speeds (hard for you to tell)?

If you are convinced of their quality then ask about their projectors.
Projectors ceased production some 20 years ago. We do not use old film projectors like Elmo and Goko! Conventional film projectors have filmgates which crops your film frame image as much as 25% Our process gets every little detail, nobody and nothing is cut out. Consider that projector systems can only attain 240 lines of horizontal resolution when DVD supports over 500 lines of horizontal resolution.

TECHNICAL SECRETS:

A major factor in conversions is encoding. Encoding is the transferring of the images into digital data which can be read by a DVD. To understand this you need to understand that Commercial DVDs like movies in the shops are mass produced using a special mastering process. Many holding up to 9GB of information.

Custom DVDs like yours, in small runs are mastered onto blank recordable DVDs (DVD-R, DVD+R the ''R'' meaning recordable) which only hold half the information (4.7GB) Here lies the problem. Some companies attempt to match commercial DVDs offering a TEMPTING 2 hours on one DVD. This is only possible by reducing the Data Rate, this is like putting your VCR on Long Play to get 6 hours of TV on a 3 hour tape where quality is reduced.
Standard encoding gives you 90 mins of top class video onto a single 4.7 GB DVD. Anyone offering over 90 minutes is simply reducing the quality of your resultant film. This is unless your video is transferred to DLT for mass pressing on DVD. The next aspect to affect quality is the QUALITY of Encoder (the kit which transfers Images to DVD).

Cheap Encoders skip an essential process, by this we mean that they convert your Images direct to MPEG2 (DVD). This Direct transfer makes your DVDs come out much darker than the original cine film footage. Once encoded nothing can be done about it. Poorly lit faces go even darker and stay like that forever. This is can only be avoided by Professional Encoding. Professionals import images to AVI computer files or DV (Digital Video) before encoding to MPEG2 (DVD). During this step, better studios watch the Cine Film whilst converting to DV or AVI and then adjust levels that are on average the best for the movie. This is like photo processing labs.  This extra process takes longer and the equipment is much more expensive.

The Cheapest encoders (around £1,000) fit in your Computer called Real-time Conversion Cards. These cards offer either Variable Rate or Constant Rate encoding. See Prices below for more info. In summary you do NOT want a Studio which encodes direct to MPEG2. How do you know? Ask if they can convert AVI files to DVD. If they not then they are using equipment you could easily buy yourself for around £1,000 plus a fast computer. With 10 x £100 orders and it has paid for itself, however the quality is still no match for Professional Equipment. If you want your Cine Films on DVD without any loss of quality, or darker faces then use a Professional and pay professional rates.

Using VBR (Variable Bit Rate) Encoding varies the bit rate depending on how much each frames changes. Eg. It is a bit like drawing a cartoon. If Bugs Bunny simply needs to wink his eye in the next frame then all the artist needs to do is redraw the eye closed, not the whole body and background, thus 95% of the image stays the same and thus needs less data for this image. Less Data means a lower bit rate, thus you are Varying the bit rate.
VBR (Variable Bit Rate) Why do we vary it? The best way to look at this is to understand that you can only get 4.7 GB of Data on a DVD, imagine this 4.7GB as a budget of money. It is better to have more £ in your pocket at weekends at the expense of less money on work days. Your spending is VARIABLE. Varying the bit rate, by giving a higher bit rate to fast changing frames, at the expense of a lower bit rate for little changing frames (i.e. Bugs Bunny winking) optimising the quality (eg optimising the spending).
Using the very latest innovations in technology our VBR encoders use a ''two pass'' operation. Pass 1 looks at the source images and determines the optimum data rate for each image sequence (sequences are defined as being visually similar pieces of footage). Pass 2 Encodes your footage using this information and varies the bit rate so it is at the highest quality possible for each sequence.
